Racehorse retraining
Retraining of Racehorse Training Package
Racehorses lead a unique existence far removed from that of the regular horse. From a young age they are trained and exposed to a lot of different stimuli ridden and travelled extensively to race courses up and down the country. Their lives are ones of routine and consistency.
Little they will have been exposed to, however, is going to help them when it comes to the process of retraining them for their new careers as riding horses and there will be a number of issues that will be encountered and need to be worked upon:
Our GRH retraining of racehorses programme addresses each of these issues preparing them for life in their future ridden careers and working with the owners to educate and train them to take this programme of training forward.

- Husbandry – Turnout may until this point have been quite limited, diet will be different, and their routines will change drastically. All this is going to cause a degree of stress and anxiety and a transition made.
- Focus – Up until this point they may not have been handled or at least ridden with an emphasis placed upon maintaining their focus. It’s not going to have been important in their racing careers but will be of the utmost importance for their new lives as riding horses.
- Energy – Getting control and having an influence over their energy levels will almost certainly be another problem we need to deal with. Again, it’s not going to have been something that will have been worked on previously but can be one of the key problems I see when retraining racehorses whose energy levels tend to be way above what we want and can be difficult to get them to come back down again.
- Yielding and body control – Racehorses are started and trained with a view to riding in racehorses and not life as a riding horses. Little to no work is done to teach the horses to yield to leg pressure or give to the snaffle bit. they are also ridden in a completely different way. This is obviously going to be something that needs to be addressed within the retraining process.
Our GRH retraining of racehorses programme addresses each of these issues preparing them for life in their future ridden careers and working with the owners to educate and train them to take this programme of training forward.
