Robertson Horse Transport
Terms & Conditions of CarriageThese Terms & Conditions apply to horses transported by Robertson Horse Transport. Our transport service is primarily offered for horses travelling to and from Guy Robertson Horsemanship for training.
By confirming a transport booking, the owner or person authorised to act on the owner’s behalf confirms that they have read, understood and accepted these Terms & Conditions.
1. Ownership & AuthorityThe person making the booking confirms that they are the legal owner of the horse or have the owner’s authority to arrange transportation and agree to these Terms & Conditions on their behalf.
2. Horse Health & Fitness to TravelThe owner is responsible for ensuring that the horse is fit to travel.
Any known illness, injury, veterinary condition, medication or other matter which could affect the horse’s welfare during loading or transportation must be disclosed before collection.
Robertson Horse Transport reserves the right to refuse to transport a horse where we reasonably believe that doing so could compromise the welfare of the horse or the safety of those involved.
3. Passports & DocumentationA valid horse passport must accompany the horse during transportation.
The owner is responsible for ensuring that the correct passport and any other documentation legally required for the journey are available at the time of collection.
We reserve the right to refuse transportation if the required documentation is not available.
4. Loading & Travelling HistoryWhen requesting transport, owners must provide an honest and accurate description of their horse’s previous loading and travelling experience.
Please tell us if your horse:
This information allows us to determine whether our transport service is appropriate, how much time should be allowed and the appropriate quotation for collection.
5. Young & Inexperienced HorsesWe recognise that young and inexperienced horses coming to Guy Robertson Horsemanship for training may need additional time, guidance and reassurance when being loaded.
One of the benefits of Robertson Horse Transport is Guy’s extensive experience handling and training young and inexperienced horses. Where discussed with us beforehand, reasonable additional assistance with loading can therefore form part of the collection process.
Our priority is to give the horse a calm and appropriate experience rather than simply getting the horse onto the vehicle as quickly as possible.
6. Established Loading Problems Robertson Horse Transport is not a mobile loading or problem-solving service.
The additional assistance described above is intended for young or inexperienced horses, or horses requiring reasonable additional guidance while being collected to come into training.
Horses with known or established loading problems must be declared when transport is requested.
If, on arrival, a horse’s loading behaviour or history is materially different from that described to us, Robertson Horse Transport reserves the right to discontinue the loading attempt and refuse transportation.
Where a collection cannot be completed because of an undisclosed or significantly underestimated loading or behavioural problem, reasonable call-out, mileage, waiting and handling charges already incurred will remain payable.
Where appropriate, a separate Loading & Travelling Training session may be recommended before transportation is attempted.
7. Loading & Unloading AreaThe owner is responsible for ensuring that a reasonably safe and suitable area is available for the horsebox to access, manoeuvre, park and load or unload the horse.
Where possible, the area should provide sufficient space and suitable ground conditions to handle the horse safely.
We reserve the right not to attempt loading or unloading where we consider the location, access, ground conditions, traffic or surrounding environment to present an unacceptable risk.
8. Additional Loading & Waiting TimeTransport quotations are based on the information provided at the time of booking and a reasonable period for collection and loading.
Where significantly additional time is required because of the horse’s behaviour, loading difficulties, delays at the collection/delivery premises or circumstances outside our control, an additional waiting or handling charge may apply.
Where possible, any additional charge will be discussed with the owner.
9. Horse Behaviour & Inherent RiskHorses are large, powerful and sometimes unpredictable animals.
While Robertson Horse Transport will take reasonable precautions and exercise appropriate care when handling, loading, transporting and unloading horses, owners acknowledge that there are inherent risks associated with the handling and transportation of horses.
Nothing within these Terms & Conditions excludes or restricts any liability which cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.
10. Damage Caused by the HorseReasonable wear and tear associated with the normal transportation of horses is accepted.
However, the owner will be responsible for the reasonable cost of repairing excessive or abnormal damage caused by their horse to the horsebox, including its interior, partitions, ramps, fixtures, fittings or equipment, except to the extent that such damage results from our negligence or breach of legal duty.
Where significant damage occurs, the owner will be informed and reasonable evidence of the damage and repair costs will be provided.
11. Horse InsuranceOwners are responsible for ensuring that their horse has appropriate insurance for transportation and, where appropriate, adequate third-party/public liability cover for injury or damage caused by their horse.
Robertson Horse Transport maintains insurance appropriate to the transport services it provides; however, this should not be treated as a replacement for the owner’s own equine insurance.
Owners should check their individual policy if they are unsure whether transportation is covered.
12. Veterinary EmergenciesIf a horse becomes ill, injured or significantly distressed during loading or transportation, we will take reasonable steps to contact the owner or nominated emergency contact.
Where we reasonably believe veterinary attention is required for the horse’s welfare and the owner cannot be contacted, the owner authorises Robertson Horse Transport to seek veterinary assistance.
Any veterinary treatment will be undertaken by the attending veterinary professional.
Unless liability otherwise rests with Robertson Horse Transport under applicable law, reasonable veterinary costs associated with the horse remain the responsibility of the owner.
13. Tack, Rugs & Personal PropertyWhere space allows, a reasonable amount of tack, rugs or equipment may be transported by prior agreement.
Items should be clearly identified and appropriately packed.
Personal belongings and equipment are transported at the owner’s risk unless loss or damage results from our negligence or another liability which cannot lawfully be excluded.
14. Journey Times & DelaysCollection and arrival times are estimates and cannot be guaranteed.
Journeys may be affected by traffic, road closures, weather conditions, breakdowns, accidents, loading delays or other circumstances outside our reasonable control.
The safety and welfare of the horse will always take priority over meeting an estimated collection or arrival time.
15. Breakdown or EmergencyIn the event of a vehicle breakdown, accident or other emergency, Robertson Horse Transport will take reasonable steps to safeguard the welfare of horses on board and arrange appropriate assistance or alternative transportation where necessary and reasonably practicable.
16. Refusal or Aborted TransportationRobertson Horse Transport reserves the right to refuse, postpone or discontinue transportation where we reasonably consider that continuing would present an unacceptable risk to:

Where a journey has already commenced, or costs have already been reasonably incurred in preparation for the booking, these costs may remain payable.
Any specific deposit or cancellation arrangements will be confirmed when transport is booked.
18. PaymentThe agreed transport charge and any applicable additional charges are payable in accordance with the payment arrangements confirmed at the time of booking.
Any significant change to the journey, collection location, destination or circumstances surrounding the horse may result in the original quotation being revised.

Robertson Horse Transport reserves the right to make reasonable decisions concerning loading, transportation, rest, journey management and unloading where necessary to protect the horse’s welfare or the safety of those involved.
