Further Training & Development
Further Training & Development
For ridden horses that are ready to progress their education and develop stronger foundations for the future.
Not every horse that comes into training needs to be started or has a particular problem to solve. Sometimes a horse simply needs more time, experience and consistent training to help them progress.
Your horse may be newly started and still green, returning to work after time off, lacking experience outside the arena or simply at a stage where you would like professional help to take their education further.
Guy works with each horse as an individual, building on the education they already have rather than starting from a predetermined programme.
With over 20 years’ experience starting and training horses in the UK and internationally, Guy has developed and continues to refine the GRH Training Programme around three key areas:
Confidence
Confidence and relaxation remain central as a horse’s education progresses.
As horses are introduced to new exercises, environments and expectations, we want them to remain comfortable, able to think and increasingly confident in what is being asked of them.
Training is progressed at a level appropriate to the individual horse, allowing them to develop without losing the confidence established in their earlier education.
Body Control
As ridden horses progress, we develop their understanding of the aids and their ability to move with greater balance, softness and control.
Depending on the horse, this may include transitions, changes of direction, lateral work, regulating energy and developing greater independence and responsiveness to the rider.
These foundations can then be developed towards whichever discipline or type of riding the horse is destined for.
Purpose
We believe horses learn best when their training has relevance and purpose.
Alongside arena work, Guy uses poles, obstacles and the wider environment to give horses opportunities to apply what they’ve learned in different situations.
This helps develop horses that aren’t simply able to perform an exercise in familiar surroundings, but can remain confident, responsive and connected to their rider when the environment changes.
Who Is This Programme For?
Further Training & Development may be suitable for:
Green horses that have already been started under saddle
Horses needing further ridden education
Horses returning to work following time off
Horses needing greater confidence and experience
Horses requiring fitness and conditioning work
Horses being prepared for polocrosse or polo
Horses whose owners would simply like professional help progressing their education
If your horse has developed a more established behavioural or training difficulty, our Problem Solving Programme may be more appropriate. We’re happy to discuss this with you before booking.
An Individual Training Programme
Every horse arrives with a different level of education, experience and confidence.
Rather than working through a fixed list of exercises, Guy assesses where the horse is currently and develops the training from there.
The aim is to build on what the horse already understands, address any gaps in their foundations and help them become more confident, balanced and responsive as their education progresses.
Training Packages
Horses are taken for a minimum of four weeks, with longer stays available depending on the individual horse and what you would like to achieve.
£385 per week, including training, hay and bedding.
Transport Into Training
We are insured to transport horses coming to Guy Robertson Horsemanship for training.
Robertson Horse Transport can provide collection directly from your yard. Please ask for a transport quote when making your training enquiry.
Your Horse’s Stay at GRH
At GRH, we believe the owner is an important part of the training process.
Visiting & Learning
Where possible, we encourage you to visit your horse during their stay. Pre-arranged private sessions with Guy are included within the training fee, giving you the opportunity to see your horse’s progress, understand the work being done and learn how to continue it yourself.
We understand that regular visits aren’t always possible, particularly for horses travelling to us from further afield. In this case, we’ll keep you updated with your horse’s progress through messages, videos and telephone updates.
Handover
The handover is an important part of every GRH training programme.
Before your horse goes home, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside Guy with your horse. This allows you to become familiar with what has been established during their stay, ask questions and practise the skills you’ll need to continue their training confidently at home.
Ongoing Support
Your horse leaving the yard doesn’t have to be the end of your training with us.
Follow-up lessons are available to previous training clients, allowing Guy to support you as your horse progresses, revisit any areas of the training when needed and help you continue developing your partnership.
Our aim is not simply to send home a better-prepared horse, but to send you both home with greater confidence, understanding and a clear way forward.
