Developing the Young Horse with Guy Robertson
Come behind the scenes at Guy Robertson Horsemanship and spend a relaxed and informative morning watching Guy work with young horses.
This Coffee Morning is a chance to see Guy working with horses at different stages of their education, while explaining what he sees, what he is looking for and why he makes the decisions he does.
Rather than a set demonstration or polished performance, you’ll get to watch Guy work with the horse in front of him. Every horse is different, so exactly what is covered will depend on the horses on the day.
What will you see?
During the morning, Guy will work with young horses and talk through his approach to developing confident, willing and well-prepared riding horses.
The demonstration may include:
- Assessing a young horse and understanding what it already knows
- Establishing communication and body control
- Building confidence in unfamiliar situations
- Preparing horses for new equipment and experiences
- Developing softness, responsiveness and focus
- Recognising when a horse is ready to progress
- Knowing when to slow down or change the approach
- How groundwork prepares a horse for ridden work
- Common problems that can develop during the starting process — and how they can be avoided
Most importantly, Guy will explain what he is seeing and why he is doing what he is doing, giving you an insight into the thought process behind his training.
Two Horses – Different Stages
Where possible, Guy will work with horses at different stages of their education, allowing you to see how the foundations develop and how the early work begins to transfer into the horse’s future training.
As we’re working with real young horses, no two Coffee Mornings will ever be exactly the same!
Tea, Coffee & Questions
After the demonstration, there will be an informal Q&A with Guy.
This is your opportunity to ask questions about what you’ve watched, young horse development, starting horses, groundwork or training in general.
You’ll also have the opportunity to see our facility and learn a little more about how horses are cared for and trained during their stay with us.
Who is it for?
Everyone is welcome.
You don’t need to bring a horse and you don’t need any previous experience of Guy’s training. Whether you own a youngster, are thinking about sending a horse away for training, work with horses professionally or simply want to improve your understanding, you’re very welcome to come along and watch.
Spectators only – no horses required.

Wet Weather
We have both outdoor training space and a covered round pen, so the demonstration can still go ahead if the Yorkshire weather isn’t on our side!
